"This Week In Ghisallo Sports"

What can we say? We had a fantastic week last week and we are trying to take advantage of the beautiful weather this spring by bringing in a lot of new and exciting stuff for you (and us) to drool over! So, grab yourself a fresh coffee and read through the list of items that are new this week!

First on the list: We have several new options for full carbon bikes coming in:

  • The Orbea Onix bikes are due to arrive any day. These are beautiful, full carbon bikes with three models having different component groups available. We have the Onix TDA (blue), with a mix of Shimano 105; the Onix TDE (red), with NEW SRAM Rival and a beautiful Onix TDF frame set (white) that you can customize with whatever component you desire! I have a feeling some Campy component coupled with a fantastic set of FlashPoint wheels would make this bike scream!

  • We have restocked our supply of Trek 4.5 bikes just in time for you guys to start climbing the hills here in the West County area with a lot more confidence and ease! Just ask us what size works best for you . . .

  • Now, don't overlook Cannondale's selection in the full carbon bike arena! We have a couple guys left in the Synapse Carbon bikes and you really need to see this bike in person to do it justice. This bike is perfectly designed! After you give 'er look, you really should take this beauty for a spin.

So, once you have stared at our new selection of full carbon bikes, you really must take them out and ride 'em! Once you get on these bikes, you will see what we're talking about!!!

Next on the list of "New & Exciting" are our saddles! We have a selection of saddles from Fizik that offer a fit for every application out there. What's better is that they have supplied us with a selection of . . . "DEMO SADDLES!!!" That's right kids, you can try 'em before you buy 'em! No excuses anymore. Get in and check 'em out!

Last but not least . . .

Our Group Rides! As spring slowly slides into summer, our participation in the weekly group rides has picked up beyond our wildest dreams. And for that, we thank you!!! For those of you not yet coming out on our group rides, please feel free to call either "Jumbo" or Breanne, or anyone at the shop for that matter, for our weekly list of who's leading the rides!!!

O.K., I fibbed . . . I have one more thing to tell you about, Orbea's Lanza 29" wheel MTB! We got 5 in last week and we only have 1 left! If that tells ya something about these bikes . . .

Well . . . that's it folks! Thanks for spending a few minutes with me and allowing me to tell you about some of our new stuff!

*no animals or trees were harmed in this post. Just one stool that wishes it had been recycled!*

It's time to RIDE!!!!!!

Our weekly group ride schedule is as strong as ever! With the arrival of Daylight Savings Time--it's feeling like Spring riding season is HERE!

We invite anyone with a road bike to come out to Ghisallo Sports and join us! Here's our schedule of weekly rides:

Monday Mornings: 30+ relaxing ride. No drop 'B' pace. Departs from the parking lot at Ghisallo Sports at 9:30am. Typically led by a shop employee or team member-this favorite travels quiet west county roads, includes two hills and some very fun, fast sections. Water stop halfway. We often deviate from the normal route if the group wants to mix it up!

Wednesday Mornings: Ladies rides! 13, 25, 35+. Various routes all beginning and ending at Ghisallo Sports. Fun, spirited, short, fast, training--whatever you need to do, this ride has it! Join in for a quick loop, or stay for the full ride--you'll have a chance to branch off, or join in later depending on your schedule. The rides generally increase in pace and difficulty with each loop. We will have a shop employee and a club member on each of these rides.

Thursday evenings: Thursday nite rides will pick up later in the year when daylight allows. Keep watching the blog for updates!

Saturday Morning Ride: The classic Ghisallo Saturday morning ride consists of 30+ miles, often two or three groups leave our parking lot. If you get here by 7am or so, you can choose between fast, WICKED fast, or moderate tempo rides. The official start for our shop ride is 7:30, but due to the popularity of the ride, the fast groups often leave a bit early and the 'B' pace group leaves around 7:30-ish. It's an out-and-back winding through Wildhorse Creek Valley, up Ossenfort to St. Albans. Pace is moderate on the way to the store in St Albans, fill those water bottles and get ready for an 'all bets are off hammerfest' back to the shop! Great race simulation and pacelining during this ride! This is the ride many of our team members participate in--we welcome you to join us!!

Amazing Bike Riders

Amazing riders come in all forms here at Ghisallo. One of our best customers is Kurt Flynn. Kurt has been building his fitness up for a couple of years and has come an incredibly long way. Rain or shine, he puts in the miles. He's gone through three frames, multiple wheels and component groups, just grinding them into recycling fodder.

A milestone for Kurt was a trip to France during the summer of 2008. This photo was taken at Alpe d'Huez during one of the 21 switchbacks. See how tall this guy is? He's taller in person and he's climbed the baddest mountains in the cycling world. Quite an inspiration.

Hats off, Kurt!

News for 2/2/09

The groundhog says 6 more weeks of winter--not what most of us are looking forward to, especially with all of the slop the last week or so. At least the weekend was cooperative!

Dealing with the Winter calls for a superior state of mind occasionally, so we are going to fire up the Monday morning rides again. If it's not below 25 degrees, snowing, icy or unbelievably windy, we will do a ride at 9:30 each Monday morning. I will do whatever the group wants to do--regular route to St Albans, Shawnerrrr loops, levee loops, hilly seat county, whatever the group decides. If the weather is cold, we'll ride a little--if it's nice, we'll do 30+. Be ready to go at 9:30 from Ghisallo parking lot!

Another clinic is coming up!
I've seen some pretty nasty looking bikes this winter! The good: means you've been riding through the winter. The bad: looks like you've been riding your road bike through the River Des Peres! I've got antibiotics and my tetanus shot, so I don't mind doing the dirty work, but I figure many of you would like to save some cash and clean your bike at home, so I am going to hold a class to show you how it's done! Here are the details:

Bike Cleaning and Lube 101
basic drivetrain cleaning and lubrication techniques, frame cleaning and general bike hygiene--class if free but size is limited-call to reserve your spot!

DATE CHANGE
THURSDAY March 5, 6pm. at Ghisallo Sports.
no need to bring your bike--we supply everything
RSVP to reserve a spot 636-728-1511

have a great week!

from the Fit Stage............

We wanted to share a letter from a customer who has become a loyal customer, teammate and friend to us here a Ghisallo.

To My Friends at Ghisallo:

In May of 2007, after much consideration, time and research I decided to purchase my first carbon fiber bike. Having been an avid admirer of Lance Armstrong, I thought a Trek Madone would be a logical choice. This was a huge step for me. To this point, I had ridden only mountain bikes. At 51 years of age and 2 years removed from heart bypass surgery, I wanted a bike that could excel in performance yet be comfortable. So I took the plunge and bought the Madone at a local bike shop in St. Louis. With such a significant purchase, I expected to not only be treated special but also get expert support and advice. After spending several thousands on the bike, accessories and clothing, they fitted me on the bike and sent me on my merry way.

Let the journey begin. After my first few rides, I was in awe of the bikes performance and abilities. However, the ride was very uncomfortable and unstable. I took the bike back to the local shop and they checked it out to make sure the fit was right. They said all was good and I just need to get used to riding a road bike since I was so used to the feel of a mountain bike. After riding for about a month, I just wasn’t feeling good about the ride. Having been a competitive runner for most of adult life, I didn’t think that my body was in that bad a shape yet everytime I rode, my neck, shoulders, back and legs would get very sore. So I took the bike back to the shop again and got the same response. The bike is set up properly, you’re probably just not feeling well because of your mountain bike experience.

I continued to ride for the remainder of the summer and fall in 2007. On two different occasions, I crashed. The first crash was caused by a skater cutting me off. On the second crash I lost it going around a corner. I really felt like both of these could have been avoided if I would have had more control over the bike. The bike just felt squirrelly all the time. I never really felt like I was in control. After logging 2,800 miles on the bike, I came to believe that I had a really cool and fast bike but it would just never be a comfortable and stable ride.

One day in December, I happened upon the Ghisallo shop and was immediately greeted by Devlin McDonough. I immediate fell in love with the shop because of the wide array of bikes, accessories, clothing and most of all customer service. Devlin and I talked frequently about riding and at one point I mentioned to him the experience that I was having on my bike. He told me that I should bring it in and let them check out the fit. I thought it would be probably be a waste of time but man was I in for a big surprise. The seat was 2 ½ inches too low and was also about 2 inches too far back. The handle bars were not set at the proper angle and the shifters were set too low. While these issues may seem minor, they are in fact very significant. I found out just how significant on my first ride. It was like I had a new bike and it felt great. Now I have finally achieved my goal of having a cool high performance bike that is comfortable and stable. It’s simply amazing what a difference it makes to have the right fit. My rides are now stronger, longer and actually enjoyable because by body doesn’t hurt.

All the credit goes to Devlin and the other pros at Ghisallo. They know their stuff.

Niner Bikes Sandwich

It's a Niner sandwich here at Ghisallo, and the Air 9 is the meat. The new arrival is the Kermit Green Jet 9. All three of these bikes should be meeting their new owners, but you might be able to check out the Kermit before it goes.

Niner Air 9 Atomic Blue

Not everyone's bike can glow in the dark. That's ok. Niner has one for you if that's the sort of thing you need for your off-road adventures. Expect to see this one floating by you during the wee hours of the night in your next 24 hour race. Who needs lights with Todd's fluorescent Air 9 leading the way?
